What you can do

Here are a few things you can do to help your case.

• Retain a lawyer right away. The sooner you retain a domestic violence attorney, the more that attorney will be able to help you.
• When consulting your lawyer, tell the whole truth. I understand that these are sensitive and embarrassing issues. If I know where the problems are, I am in a better position to do something about them. Holding information back from me could result in some ugly surprises later, at which point there is less I can do to help you. Remember that what you tell me in the course of an attorney-client relationship is privileged information. Even if you get a new lawyer, I cannot divulge what you tell me in confidence.
• Keep your support system together. When someone is accused of a crime, their family suffers too. It's important to rally around your friends or loved ones to get them through this.
